Tutorial: How to reclaim your internet privacy
If you’re like you’re like me, you’re probably pretty upset about losing your internet privacy and having your information being made available to the highest bidder. Luckily, in the world of technology, if there’s a will, there’s a way. We at Nintendo Nuggets have compiled a guide that will hopefully reignite the flames of privacy throughout the web. Unlike other guides, our guide will help you protect your information on ALL Devices instead of just one.
While there are a lot of tutorials on the internet for setting up a VPN, we couldn’t find any ‘accurate’ tutorials for covering ALL devices without purchasing DDRT compliant routers. Fortunately, our method only requires a Wifi enabled PC. Sound good so far, well let’s get started!
What is a VPN
A virtual private network (VPN) is a protocol that creates a safe and encrypted connection over a less secure network. In short, using a VPN will neatly mask all of your packets from your ISP and all they will see is something like “sf4gdx4s#Sdfsdaulrp5xd2g$456gdfs4oeh” instead of detailed logs of your activity.
How do I get a VPN?
Free VPN services generally fall into one of three categories: ad-supported, time limit or bandwidth restrictions. Paid VPN services generally do not have any resource restrictions and are not ad-supported. Personally, I use ExpressVPN due to it being one of the few options available that supports Netflix

Step 1: Configure your Virtual Router
Now that we’ve selected and set up our VPN software, its time to setup and configure our virtual DHCP client. This can be done by following the steps outlined below.
- Open a command prompt with Administrative Privileges.
- Enter the following command to configure your Virtual Router
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=NetworkName key=NetworkPassword
Notes: In this scenario, NetworkName represents the name of your network and NetworkPassword represents your password.
Example:As illustrated in the picture below, based on the command we entered, a new connection was created with the name “NGS-Router” and has a Wifi Password of “12345”.
You can change these parameters to suit your needs. We recommend setting a strong password.
- Enter the following command to start your network
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
Step 2: Enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)
- navigate to Network Connections, locate your VPN Adapter, right click and select Properties.
- Select the Sharing tab, then enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS
- Next, in the “Home Networking Connection” section, select the router we created in Step 1 and press OK.
Step 3: Connect to your VPN
- Start your VPN Service
Step 4: Connect to Ad-Hoc network and Configure Subnet on All devices
- Go to a new computer or device
- Configure your Network Settings as Follows (Default Settings)
IP Address: 192.168.137.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.137.1
Primary DNS: 192.168.137.1
Note: Each device will require a unique IP Address. Examples can be seen belowPC #2: 192.168.137.101
PC #3: 192.168.137.102
PC #4: 192.168.137.103
PC #5: 192.168.137.104
PC #6: 192.168.137.105
The Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and Primary DNS remain the same on ALL DEVICES
- Next, connect to the virtual router we created in Step 1, this can be done by simply selecting the network name from ‘Available Networks’ on your device, the same steps as connecting to any wireless network.
- You have reclaimed your privacy
Update Wifi Connection on ALL Wi-Fi enabled devices
Once you’ve tested your new connection, make sure you update your connection on ALL of your devices. This includes your Cellphone, Xbox, Wii U, Switch, TV, Phone, Refrigerator etc… Congratulations, you are now protected
