New Nintendo President, Tatsumi Kimishima’s TIME interview.
In a recent December 3rd interview with TIME, the new Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima told TIME about the future of the company. He touched on many things including mobile gaming, the making of “Nintendo Account” and “My Nintendo.” He also admitted the company has not done a great job explaining Miitomo, Nintendo’s upcoming and first ever mobile game, saying,
“First of all, I think you’re right, I don’t think we have been able to successfully communicate what we’re trying to do at this point.”
He touched on not giving up on the Wii u saying,
“I think our first job right now is to make sure that the customers, those 10 million customers who have a Wii U at home have software to play. And we need to make sure that they are satisfied with their purchase and continue to enjoy playing on this platform. So we can’t just abandon them and say ‘Hey, it’s time to move on to the next thing.’ Of course we are working on NX and looking at the experiences we can bring to that platform. But first our job at this point is to support the consumers who have purchased Wii U and make sure that they have software experiences available to them.”
The new president also spoke about amiibo. He says the company needs to make better games for the amiibo to connect with because the majority of people buying amiibo are collectors.
Kimishima spoke briefly about the NX saying it’s a different experience and a depature from the Wii and Wii U, which could mean a departure from motion controls. Talking about the NX he said,
“That being said, I can assure you we’re not building the next version of Wii or Wii U. It’s something unique and different. It’s something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base.”
Other things talked about were that the “Quality of life initiative” is still underway, Dedicated game platforms remain Nintendo’s chief preoccupation, and that he probably wont just be a one year president as talked about when he first got the job as President of Nintendo.
The most interesting thing that came from the interview with TIME was what could have been a slip by the new president or a problem with translation or maybe just fans looking to deep into his every word. At one point in the interview while explaining what the fellowship positions means, Kimishima was talking about Shigeru Miyamoto and Takishi Tezuka and said, “Its really working day to day with the talented staff we have at Nintendo and growing and nurturing that creative force. Like Mr. Konno responsible for the Mario Kart series or Mr. Koizumi who is in our Tokyo office with Mario Galaxy.” Now there are three different things he could have meant by this. One, he could just be saying the last big 3D Mario game Koizumi worked on but in that case he could have said the more recent Super Mario 3D world, two, and maybe the most unlikely of the three, there is an HD remake planned for the future, and three, There is a Mario Galaxy 3 planned, probably as a launch title for the upcoming Nintendo NX. Ultimately we don’t know what that comment really meant and we will just have to wait and see to find out.
